Members help renew America's promise

On the eve of his inauguration, then President-elect Barack Obama issued a call of Renewing America's Promise: A Day of National Service to honor Dr. King's legacy. This was a perfect opportunity for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters to continue the organization's history of giving service. Members around the world executed the Sorority's Extraordinary Service Program Platforms through activities that included:

  • Mentoring at-risk middle school students
  • Participating in a college expo for elementary school students
  • Providing, preparing and serving meals at soup kitchens, food banks and for residents of a Ronald McDonald house
  • Packaging donations to be sent to Iraq
  • Donating canned food, clothing and paper products to homeless shelters
  • Volunteering at a social service and welfare business designed to provide less fortunate clientele with free services
  • Participating in annual parades, marches and unity walks in honor of Dr. King

In addition, members volunteered and assembled packages at the flagship service event, "A Day of Service for Our Military," held on the national observance of Dr. King's birthday in Washington, DC.
