Official swearing in culminates a two-month confirmation process

On July 25, 2006, Honorary Member Gayleatha Brown was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Benin. Before a crowd of supporters that included International Regional Director Dr. Gloria Harper Dickinson and many other AKAs, Gayleatha took the oath of office and assumed the post.
After a compelling nomination presentation to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which showcased her goals for, and knowledge of, Benin, she was approved by the Committee and confirmed by the full Senate.
Gayleatha brings to the post an impressive 24-year career as an envoy and foreign diplomat. Immediately prior to her appointment, she was the political counselor in Pretoria, South Africa. She also provided diplomatic counsel toZimbabwe, Tanzania and Cote d'Ivoire.
Gayleatha Brown was welcomed into membership during Alpha Kappa Alpha's 2002 international convention in Orlando, FL.
